The first character concept for my novel,
the winged animal companion Malak
Please keep in mind that the original
names are in german
and the english translations are only rough.
Malak is always seen on the side of the spacepirate John Breach - he will never leave him alone unless he's forced or told to. If he's set apart from him the creature tends to become nervous and moody and should not be pestered in any way. Appearantly, John is the only person who can understand Malak fully, which might be because they share a special bond eversince John saved him from a certain death on his home planet, Geryon.
Species: Schleicher [ engl. Lurker ]
Home planet: Geryon.
Size: approximately the size of an ocelot.
Personality: Witty, alert and active this creature embodies the traits of feline and avian parts that it's made of. While he at first might not seem to be more than a regular animal, Malak soon proves to be astoundingly intelligent and loyal like a watchdog to his lifesaver, John Breach. The spacepirate is the only person in the world that can controll Malak without using any treats nor threats. Still, this animal loves to eat special crackers from their spaceharbor, Skyonia, which John usually always carries with him.
Character creation process: When I created the character of John Breach I knew that he would need some sort of animal companion to refine his personality and appearance. There were two reasons why I was thinking that - he is a handicapped man. He lost many parts of his right side that were replaced with machinery, making him a cyborg. Since the technology in this world is very steampunk-like he would need help at times to reach certain things or to catch a person / animal / some other thing. Secondly, he's a very impressive character that seems very mighty, very powerful and yet fatherly. Some sort of pet that he shows unrestrained affection to seemed to be the perfect choice to give his personality that soft touch that it needed to show clearly.
Since there are no regular animals in this world I had to consider what kind of creature I wanted to give him. At first I thought about something like a dog or cat creature, but that seemed too stereotypical. A bird was also out of question as I didn't want to give him a fantasy-piratish look with a fake parrot on his shoulder. Thus I started to combine and, which was a coincidence, I created this character. I love his design and I think he's exactly the right match for John Breach.
... there is much more to this character!
